The Tipo is no more. For now, at least. Long story short, yesterday morning I dropped it off at a seemingly well reputed shop to repair the passenger side window and towed it out this morning with no compression in any of the four cylinders, four burnt out spark plugs covered in oil and a nasty slapping noise whenever I tried to crank the engine. Two friends/trusty mechanics who came over from my hometown just to help sort this mess out say it’s pretty clear the engine has thrown more than one rod, and that it may have cracked the block and crankshaft as well.
How the fuck this happened is beyond me, but the shop’s excuse is that they were maneuvering the car into a lift when the old and worn out timing belt snapped. A timing belt I’d replaced in January and that was found intact and perfectly functional right where it should be.
Somehow, they destroyed my engine, and there’s no way it happened during low speed maneuvers. Still, there’s a good chance the car will be back in action in a couple months’ time. Back and with a vengeance... because I’ve enough stuff for a solid lawsuit against the shop. In the meantime however... pour one out for a fallen brother...

Whaat....certainly sounds like it's lawsuit time, that is some shady stuff. I hope it gets repaired, such a cool car :(

Is yours a 2.0 S edicivalvole or the 1.8?

Wow, that really sucks...I’m super happy to hear that you’re repairing it though and not just getting rid of it, it seems like an awesome little run about! Can’t wait to hear updates and news about the pending lawsuit...best of luck to you!

Horseshit. Time for a lawsuit. At least they were dumb enough to try to blame an in-tact timing belt.

It might take a couple months, but that’s what I bought another Sedicivalvole for... And yeah, my friends disassembled and checked the engine over with a lawyer nearby so we can have all the evidence we need to tear them a new asshole

Oh good! It really sucks that you have to do all that work, but at least you have all the parts you need...good to hear it should work out though

Yeah, they fucked up the engine, then made a mess of explaining themselves over a recorded phone call. There’s no way damage that extensive would have occurred during low speed maneuvers. Putting together the fact I drove the car in with a smooth running engine, plus my invoice for a handful of minor electrical issues and no mention whatsoever of engine or other mechanical problems, it’s pretty suggestive they were the ones to fuck my engine up...

Both my Tipos are 2.0 Sedicis. I actually bought the second one as a preemptive measure in case something like this happened.

You and I have similar tactics, most people have an unreliable european car and something else that works, we decided on two unreliable european cars if something goes wrong.

Haha, true... what’s more, my first Sedici now has a bad block and rods, while the other one has a bad crank, but a good block and rods. I guess we’ll try pitting them together, see what comes out of it. At least we won’t spend anymore on parts.

I think if you squeeze them together hard enough, a Tempra turbo comes out.

Well, there’s a chance I won’t have to. Been talking to the lawyers again, and they say our mechanics should take the engine apart, documenting every step of the way, then file a lawsuit. Depending on how it goes, there’s a chance they will be ruled to pay up to get the engine rebuilt at whatever specialist we want to send it to, and there’s this guy in England who used to be known as the Twin Cam God... The total cost would probably add up to over 40 Thousand reais, and the shop would have to cover all of it.

That would be excellent....you could have a perfect engine, and they would get a very expensive lesson

Considering the economic scenario in Brazil, that lesson coud cost them the shop, which would probably make the judge rule the cost as excessive. BUT, and that’s a big but, that wouldn’t be the first time they’d close up shop because of a lawsuit they couldn’t afford.
